Description
A Ribera del Duero red wine with a seductive freshness and complexity
The estate
Bodega Pago de los Capellanes was founded in 1996 by the Rodero Villa family whose ambition was to produce fine Ribera del Duero wines.
The Bodega watches over a renowned vineyard in the heart of the Castilla and León region, which enjoys ideal climatic conditions that ensure an optimal and progressive ripening of the grapes.
Fresh, refined and intensely aromatic, Pago de los Capellanes’ wines, recently voted as one of the world's Top 100 Wineries by the Wine & Spirits magazine, are a pure and delicate expression of the richness and potential of these fine Spanish terroirs.
The vineyard
This 2017 Crianza by Pago de los Capellanes stems from selected vineyards in Pedrosa de Duero, Anguix and Roa. The vines are 35 years old on average and are planted on arid, stony soils composed of clay and limestone.
The vintage
The winter began with cool temperatures, but from February onwards the temperatures were milder, enabling the vines to bud early. At the end of April, a major frost affected the vineyard, these conditions led to a delay in the vegetative cycle and thus, a decrease in yields. Thereafter, the pleasant weather conditions regarding both the temperature and the amount of rainfall were optimal and led to good ripeness levels.
Vinification and ageing
Cold pre-fermentation maceration for 3 days. Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with selected wild yeasts, along with pumping over. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 12 months in 300 litre French oak barrels.
