Macallan: Highland whisky excellence since 1824
Founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid at Easter Elchies, Macallan has established itself as one of the emblematic distilleries of Highland and Speyside whisky. Legalised in 1843, it remained in the Kemp family until 1996. Since 1999, the Edrington Group has owned it, driving a remarkable premiumisation strategy. Macallan stands out for its exclusive maturation in sherry casks – Edrington controls 95% of Scottish imports of these casks – and its use of Golden Promise barley. With 21 stills and an ultra-premium positioning, the distillery embodies the excellence of Scotch single malt, contributing significantly to the group’s one billion pounds in revenue.
Double Cask 12 Years Old: the meeting of two traditions
Double Cask 12 Years Old represents the perfectly balanced expression of the Macallan range, the result of exclusive maturation in sherry casks from two distinct origins. This single malt is aged for twelve years in a combination of European oak and American oak sherry-seasoned casks, creating a harmonious marriage between the elegant, refined characteristics of European oak and the smooth sweetness reminiscent of vanilla and butterscotch from American oak.
This double maturation gives this Scotch whisky its natural golden colour and its distinctive flavour profile, less bitter than the Sherry Oak and Triple Cask variants. Double Cask 12 Years Old is therefore an excellent choice for enthusiasts looking to discover the Macallan universe, while still offering the complexity and depth appreciated by connoisseurs. This expression perfectly embodies the distillery’s philosophy: creating exceptional single malts through rigorous cask selection and know-how passed down for nearly two centuries. This unpeated whisky is bottled at 40% ABV.
