Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

This is pleasingly fresh and lively on the palate, featuring a lacy mousse and crisp acidity. Flavors of white cherry, pink grapefruit sorbet and pickled ginger gain added richness from accents of marzipan and pastry. Disgorged September 2017. Drink now through 2029. 1,000 cases made, 150 cases imported.

This wine is still young, with extreme freshness from the low dosage. However, all elements are there for a great future for this taut, citrus and kiwi-flavored wine. The tense structure will soften and fill out. Drink this vintage from 2021.

This has complex clotted-cream and lemon-pastry aromas with a succulent and sleek feel that holds a wealth of supple, smoky-peach and lemon flavor. Very plush texture. Smoothly resolved and nicely balanced. Drink now.

Equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from '10 of the best terroirs in the heart of Champagne'. 20% fermented in barrel. Disgorged September 2017, then 18 months in the Paillard cellars before release. Dosage 5 g/l. Label by Swedish artist Anna-Lisa Unkuri. Very pale gold. Deep aroma that is toasty and lightly honeyed with notes of tangy citrus, mostly clementine. Full and yeasty in the mouth too, with lees richness balanced by extreme freshness. Fine and persistent mousse that has started to mellow but is still vibrant, like the citrusy acidity. Long and complex but should continue to age well in bottle for some years. Deliciously dry but not austere thanks to the full flavours and that slight honeyed character. (JH)

The 2009 Extra Brut Assemblage is a gorgeous wine that captures the essence of the vintage in its radiant, open-knit personality. Soft curves and plush, forward fruit add to its considerable allure. Although not especially complex, the 2009 is wonderfully expressive and inviting today. It has enough body and depth to develop nicely for a number of years, but also offers a good bit of freshness as well. This is such a pretty and expressive wine. Hints of dried flowers, pear and spice linger on the pretty finish. Disgorged: September, 2017.

Marked by the richness of the vintage, the 2009 is a broader, more filling wine that is best served with a meal.

Description

Bruno Paillard reveals an aromatic and delicate vintage blended champagne

The estate

Founded in Reims in 1981, Bruno Paillard is one of the youngest Champagne Houses. With an uncompromisable selection of terroirs, the exclusive use of first presses, blends made from a vast collection of reserve wines and an ageing time that is twice as long as required by appellation specifications, the Bruno Paillard champagne range reflects this constant quest for excellence and this desire to produce a "very personal style". Through elegant, complex and wonderfully pure champagnes, the Bruno Paillard House elevates its Champagne know-how to the top of its game.

The vineyard

The Bruno Paillard Champagne House overlooks an exceptional and patiently built vineyard, spread over 32 hectares of vines and 15 growths, 12 of which are classified as "Great Growths". The vineyard brings together the great terroirs of OgerLe Mesnil sur OgerCumières and Verzenay as well as the exceptional Cru des Riceys, situated at the south of Champagne.

The wine

Bruno Paillard’s "Assemblage 2009" is made from grapes which come from ten of the best growths at the heart of Champagne and exclusively from first presses.

Each vintage cuvée from the Bruno Paillard Champagne House authentically bears witness to a unique year, style and tasting experience. Bruno Paillard wishes to make the packaging the perfect expression of each vintage through every character, word, artist and thus every canvas…The history of each great year in Champagne is thus illustrated by means of a unique work which is rich in diversity.

The label of this atypical vintage is decorated with the work of Swedish artist Anna-Lisa Unkuri’s "Invitation to travel". This oil painting perfectly reflects the delicate union between the characteristic vitality of the house’s cuvées and the specificities of this vintage, with a solar generosity and fragrances reminiscent of distant lands. This artist centres the spectator around her works, which contain a dreamlike atmosphere advocating for travel as a joyful action which leaves one enthralled.

The vintage

A cold and windy winter, marked by an alternation between rain and snow, preceded a spring that was punctuated by stormy spells. The hot and dry summer did not impact the vines thanks to sufficient water reserves, and encouraged a gradual and exceptional ripening process.

Winemaking and ageing

Bruno Paillard’s "Assemblage 2009" was aged for seven years on lees, then for a minimum of 18 months after disgorging. Its dosage is 5g/L.

Blend

Bruno Paillard’s "Assemblage 2009" is made from a blend of Chardonnay (50%) and Pinot Noir (50%), of which 20% are fermented in barrels.

Tasting

Colour

The wine is a bright and beautiful golden colour. Effervescence is light, with a beautiful liveliness.

Nose

The nose mixes fragrances of candied dried fruits and intense black fruits with notes of citrus, kumquat and acacia honey.

Palate

Rich and with a creamy touch, the palate seduces with its subtle notes of sweet spices, nuts and its lingering freshness.

Food and wine pairings

Bruno Paillard’s "Assemblage 2009" is gourmet and and sophisticated pairing with shellfish or even cheeses (Comté, extra-old Mimolette).
