Description

The elegance and richness of a vintage champagne resulting from a long ageing period

The producer

Established for nearly five centuries in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the Philipponnat Champagne House is one of the historic names in the Champagne region. Singularity, excellence, generosity and simplicity are the values that guide this house, which has remained a family-owned business. Owned by the house since 1935, the mythical Clos des Goisses is one of the oldest and most prestigious plots in the Champagne region. This utter gem is the source of rare and exceptionally powerful champagnes.

The Philipponnat Champagne house reigns over an exceptional 20-hectare vineyard composed of Premiers and Grands Crus in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay.

The vineyard

The name of the Cuvée 1522 Grand Cru by Philipponnat refers to the date when the Philipponnat family settled in the village of Ay. This cuvée comes from the house’s finest vineyards, notably from the historical parcels of "Léon" in Ay.

The wine

Produced in very limited quantities, the Cuvée 1522 Grand Cru "Long Vieillissement" 2002 of Philipponnat pays tribute to time and perfection. Resulting from a rigorous selection among the illustrious terroirs of Champagne, this exceptional cuvée, whose initials stand for "Long Vieillissement", benefits from a 20-year ageing period in the cellars of the house, followed by a six-month disgorgement before being released onto the market.

The vintage

A cold, dry and sunny autumn favouring soil regeneration preceded a rainy winter until mid-March. Although the mild spring and the cessation of rain were ideal and ensured an early budding of the vines, the cool weather in May and early June was accompanied by storms and hail which had an impact on certain plots. In mid-June, flowering took place under sunny conditions before a summer marked by unstable weather conditions. The month of September was very mild, with significant temperature variations between day and night, allowing the grapes to mature. The grapes harvested boasted a high-quality and revealed a concentrated, aromatic and balanced expression.

The blend

Pinot Noir (70%)

Chardonnay (30%).

Philipponnat’s Cuvée 1522 "Long Vieillissement" 2002: Characteristics and tasting tips

The tasting

Ample and precise, this exceptional cuvée offers an alluring precision, tension and an intense fruity framework. One of the most successful vintages of the decade, this 2002 seduces with its perfect expression of the potential and nuances of each grape variety in the blend. The refreshing exotic and floral aromas of the Chardonnay varietal blend harmoniously with the power of the Pinot Noir grapes, giving off fruity (red and black fruits), spicy, tobacco and leather aromas.
