Decanter

This is initially somewhat closed, but opens in time to show dark plum fruit aromas with a slightly woodsy edge. At this point the wine is still somewhat reduced, yet there is interesting potential, and enough extract and structure to give satisfying depth and length. There are two parcels, both in Aux Charmes, one downslope from Camus, one next to Rousseau; the total surface is 1.32ha. Mostly destemmed and fermented with a gentle extraction.

Zekun Shuai

Baked fruit, dark cherries and moss, with an obviously jammy aspect from the vintage. Hints of blackberries and rose petals. Almost lush and voluptuous, but certainly very silky and warm, with lots of generosity and roundness. Full-bodied and pretty flavorful. If you like rich, very ripe pinot, go for this. Drink now.

Bettane+Desseauve

Ripe, generous and racy, with a sweetness impression from the élevage that gives it a distinctive style. The tannins are very fine and wrapped, bringing delicacy in a vintage where that’s not the general hallmark. It can be enjoyed a little earlier for once.

Description

An expressive and delicate Charmes-Chambertin Grand cru

The estate

Founded in 1782 and producing wine across nine Burgundy appellations, Domaine Henri Rebourseau is one of the largest estates in owning Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits. The estate accommodates land assets of exceptional vines planted on lands that have been worked for more than 1,400 years. Today, the Surrel family cares for this amazing heritage, using biological and biodynamic agricultural practices. It is the territory, rather than the House, that garners the esteem for the wine’s identity

The vineyard

Grand cru 2020 is a Charmes-Chambertin wine that stems from the eponymous vineyard on the Côte de Nuits. The vines rest on a 1.32 hectare plot in the highest part of the appellation, on limestone soils rich in pebbles, marls and iron.

The wine

The 20th century French historian Gaston Roupnel described the precious and singular character of this territory as "between a Chambertin and a Charmes, there is the difference of vigour and robustness softening, which often, even in good years, is compensated for by a finesse that is more open, i.e. more sensitive and more assertive."

The vintage

This vintage was marked by an unprecedentedly rainy start to the season in Burgundy, caused by sunny conditions and higher than normal seasonal temperatures. The winter rains replenished ground water which could then compensate the lack of rainfall during the growing season. Unfortunately, a short rainy period disrupted flowering leaving a notably low yield. Despite that, the grapes matured under excellent conditions and ripened up to the harvest, gradually developing remarkable tannins.

Winemaking and ageing

The macerations produced colourful and balanced wines with great ageing potential. Fast vinification with minimal intervention was chosen for this vintage.
