Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the Kilkerran Distillery 8 Years Old Cask Strength Sherry Cask
Tasting
Nose
The nose opens with generous notes of dried fruit and currants, joined by aromas of fig and date. Hints of dark chocolate and salted butter caramel follow, lifted by a touch of sweet spices reminiscent of cinnamon and nutmeg. Delicate peat smoke and iodine notes, recalling the sea air of Campbeltown, bring a saline, slightly mineral dimension that balances the richness imparted by the Sherry casks.
Palate
On the palate, the whisky unfolds with a round, slightly oily texture typical of the Campbeltown style. Flavours of dried fruit, raisins and prune combine with notes of dark chocolate and caramel, while sweet spices give structure to the whole. The subtle peat and iodine touches return on the finish, bringing a salty, smoky edge that offsets the indulgent Sherry character and pleasantly prolongs the tasting, carried by the characteristic power of a cask-strength spirit.
Pairings and tasting occasions
Bottled at its natural strength, this Kilkerran 8 Years Old Cask Strength Sherry Cask reveals its full complexity when enjoyed at room temperature in a tulip glass, which helps to concentrate its aromas. A few drops of pure water can be added to soften the power of the alcohol and further bring out the notes of dried fruit, chocolate and subtle peat smoke, without diminishing the spirit's assertive character.
Mixology
Given its cask-strength nature and bold aromatic character, this Kilkerran 8 Years Old Cask Strength Sherry Cask is best enjoyed neat, to fully appreciate the expression of the spirit and the richness imparted by the Sherry casks. This type of limited-edition bottling is designed first and foremost to be savoured in its purest form, without embellishment.
Kilkerran 8 Years Old Cask Strength Sherry Cask: a cask-strength, delicately peated Single Malt Scotch whisky from Campbeltown
Kilkerran Distillery: the revival of Campbeltown Scotch whisky
Kilkerran is the name under which the Glengyle distillery markets its Scotch whisky from Campbeltown, a historic region once dubbed the “whisky capital of the world”. Founded in 1872 by William Mitchell and closed in 1925, the distillery was revived in 2004 by J&A Mitchell & Co Ltd, the independent family-owned company that also owns Springbank and still runs Kilkerran Distillery today. The name Kilkerran, derived from the Gaelic “Cille Chiarain” (the church of Saint Kieran), roots the brand in local heritage. Deliberately limited and artisanal, production relies on partial malting carried out on Springbank's floor maltings, long fermentations and stills inherited from the defunct Ben Wyvis distillery, giving Kilkerran whiskies a lightly peated, oily and mineral style true to the identity of Campbeltown.
Kilkerran 8 Years Old Cask Strength Sherry Cask: a limited edition with a bold character
The Kilkerran 8 Years Old Cask Strength Sherry Cask is a Single Malt produced at the Glengyle distillery in Campbeltown, from barley partly malted on Springbank's floor maltings and distilled in modified stills from the former Ben Wyvis distillery. This Cask Strength is matured entirely in ex-Sherry casks, chosen for their ability to impart a wealth of dried fruit, spices and chocolate notes while preserving the spirit's lightly peated, maritime character. Bottled as a limited edition, this 8-year-old follows in the line of expressions designed to showcase the most direct and authentic face of the Campbeltown style, ahead of older ages such as the 12 or 16 Years Old. Unlike standard bottlings, it is offered at its natural strength, without reduction or adjustment, preserving the aromatic intensity characteristic of the Glengyle spirit. Each edition is produced in limited quantities, in keeping with the distillery's small-batch policy, which favours quality and traceability over mass production. This positioning makes the Kilkerran 8 Years Old Cask Strength Sherry Cask a favourite among Scotch whisky enthusiasts seeking a raw, expressive whisky true to the maritime, lightly peated identity of Campbeltown.
